Each land purchase entry includes date of purchase, receipt number, purchaser's name, quarter section, section, township, range, number of acres, rate per acre, amount received in forfeited land stock, amount received in military scrip, and amount of purchase money. An act of Congress dated May 10, 1800, established federal land offices in Steubenville, Cincinnati, Chillicothe, and Marietta to facilitate the sale of land in the Northwest Territory. The last federal land office in Ohio at Chillicothe closed in 1876 and all federal land office records were transferred to the Auditor of State's Office in 1877.
